'Abstractions of a Culture': towards a retrospective

The Melrose Gallery will present Dr Esther Mahlangu in the Past/ Modern Section of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2020. The stand, curated by Ruzy Rusike, will be called ' Abstractions of a Culture': towards a retrospective and will present a timeline of Dr Mahlangu’s impressive achievements and valuable contribution to contemporary art over 3 decades.

Nontobeko Ntombela and Nkule Mabasa have been appointed to curate Dr Mahlangu’s Retrospective exhibition which is set to launch in South Africa in 2022 before it begins a tour of respected international museums from 2023. This exhibition is to be considered the beginning of the journey towards the curation of her much deserved and anticipated Retrospective Exhibition. 

An intimate video interview with Dr Mahlangu, rare large 3,6m x 2,4m painting of the likes of the one recently commissioned by Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys for the Dean Collection and an installation piece made up of over 50 A4 paintings of symbols that Dr Mahlangu has used in the creation of her globally acclaimed bold, modern, geometric artworks over the course of her illustrious career.

Dr Mahlangu will visit her stand on the 14th February during the VIP preview day.
